The Fruit of Her Hands
What the Book Bloggers Say

With Shira, Michelle Cameron has created a refreshingly real woman that makes the plucky heroines that dominate historical novels seem like anachronistic caricatures. Shira accepts the social mores of her era and her religion that bind her to a life of selflessness and obedience.... Shira and Meir’s is a love story that is refreshingly real with its misunderstandings, hurts, passions, acts of kindness and loyalty.

Another pleasure in reading The Fruit of Her Hands is Cameron’s ability to weave an unfamiliar history into the narrative of Shira’s life without making the story seem as if it were a history lesson.

Those who enjoy Jewish history and medieval history will surely enjoy The Fruit of Her Hands, but I would recommend this novel to anyone who loves good characterization and writing that makes her think.

Legend of the Dead: Patricia O'Sullivan

Well-researched, and rich with both historical detail, and emotion, this is a book that readers of historical fiction will find informative and deeply satisfying.

I also finished "The Fruit of her Hands" by Michelle Cameron over the weekend. Wonderful book that fictionalizes the true story of a famous Jewish rabbi's wife's story from the middle ages. The persecution of the Jewish people by the Church was horrific and was widespread not only in continental Europe but also in England.

I simply could not put this book down and eagerly awaited the moments when I could pick it up again.  Readers fascinated with the medieval period will appreciate Michelle Cameron's attention to detail not only to the history but also in her incorporation of medieval literature into the plot.  Most of all, Medieval enthusiasts will relish the opportunity to view medieval history through a new lens.  As a modern reader, later history cannot help but inform one's reading of THE FRUIT OF HER HANDS, giving it even more power and meaning.  While clearly placing her story within a specific thoroughly researched historical moment of time, Michelle Cameron also captures timeless themes that makes THE FRUIT OF HER HANDS resonate with modern readers.  Whether your interest is in the time period itself, Jewish history, or the spirituality of women, THE FRUIT OF HER HANDS is a treasure.

BOOK ILLUMINATIONS

History comes vividly alive as Michelle Cameron weaves together historical events with a bit of fiction to craft a moving and very powerful portrayal of the life of a Jewish woman in the thirteenth century. THE FRUIT OF HER HANDS evokes a strong emotional response that lasts long after the last page has been turned. Bravo!

BOOK ILLUMINATIONS
From Debbie Wiley Book Reviews

I know nothing about Rabbi Meir ben Baruch and his life or his teachings. All I know is that after reading this book, I have now found myself a new favorite author in Michelle Cameron. The Fruit of Her Hands: The Story of Shira of Ashkenaz is one of the best books of 2009! I had mixed feelings about this book, even before I picked it up and started reading it. Instantly I was transported to another world. I lost myself in Shira and Meir's story. . . . Michelle Cameron didn't just tell a story, she painted a portrait. Don't just take my word for how good this book is. Pick up a copy of The Fruit of Her Hands: The Story of Shira of Ashkenaz for yourself.

Cameron’s writing shows the evidence of extensive historical research and considerable learning. . . . Many readers may be surprised at the depth of hatred and prejudice directed against the Jews. By bringing this to life, Cameron performs an important service. It seems almost miraculous that any people could have survived centuries of such treatment. . . . Shira is the daughter of a rabbi and marries a rabbi, Meir of Rothenberg. It is a true love match, and Cameron does full justice to their loving relationship. Her description of their wedding and first night together is truly lyrical and lovely. . . .this is a moving story, expertly told by a writer who has immersed herself in a past era and brought it brilliantly to life.

Curled Up with a Good Book

Shira is a strong and powerful force in the family that you can tell author Michelle Cameron is proud to be part of.

Michelle's novel is one of strength. I am still amazed at how Shira views life. Anyone who questions life and meaning should read this book. I love when I'm halfway through a book and I have to set it aside and just absorb everything I've read so far. This is definitely one of those books.

Readaholic

With a deep look at the Jewish lifestyle in peril in medieval France, readers will enjoy the “story of Shira Ashkenaz”, wife of a renowned Jewish thirteenth century scholar.

Mainstream Fiction

I was amazed and impressed by the way in which the author took her research of her 13th century ancestor, Rabbi Meir ben Baruch, and wrote an historical novel based on his life. Although she knew little about his wife, the author recreated her, Shira of Ashkenaz, as the main character in her novel. . . . Those interested in the history of religion in 13th century France, Germany, and England, and in the conflict between the Jews and Christians on an official basis and in the daily life of the time, will be fascinated by the research as well as by the fictional story of Shira as wife and mother.

Bird Dog Review

Shira and her family are strong in their faith and community, and refuse to allow their fears to control them. In the midst of this unrest, we learn what a great and important man Rabbi Meir ben Baruch is in his lifetime. . . . . Blending the history of her ancestor and his fictional family with Jewish faith and custom, The Fruit of Her Hands is a moving story that spans several generations.

Bergers Book Reviews

Michelle Cameron has written an inspiring, entertaining, and moving novel. . . . . Shira has a rebellious streak, which occasionally exasperates her husband, while at the same time she’s respectful of tradition. This gives the novel historical authenticity and contemporary appeal. . . . From the yeshiva of Falaise to the bustling markets of Les Halles in Paris to their 21-room house along the Tauber in Rothenberg, Cameron’s wonderfully fluid style carries the story forward. It’s simply a joy to read, and as we follow the characters’ lives, we get to see medieval Europe from a new and important perspective. . . . Despite the troubling times in which the characters live, The Fruit of Her Hands is ultimately a story about love, scholarship, resilience, and hope which allows for greater understanding of the Jewish faith.

Reading the Past

Beautifully written, absorbing novel set in the thirteenth century. Highly recommended.
